Retinal ageing

While retinal ageing cannot be prevented, its consequences can be prevented. This is one of the major challenges of the Densmore laboratory.

Exposure of the retina to oxidative stress

The retina is a true metabolic factory that converts light messages into brain-interpretable nervous messages. It is the mechanism of visual perception. Excessive exposure of the retina to light, particularly to blue wavelengths, increases oxidative stress and associated ageing phenomena. This aggression of cells by free radicals is amplified with age, genetic predispositions, smoking, obesity, or inadequate nutrition1.

Protect yourself to better prevent AMD

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness after 50 years of age in industrialised countries2. The macula, located in the centre of the retina, directs 90% of the visual information1. Its degeneration is chronic and leads in particular to a loss of central vision1. It is related to oxidative stress and inflammatory phenomena2. The rate of progression of the disease is unpredictable and varies greatly among individuals1.

Eat well to fight retinal ageing

There are different forms of AMD1. Some of them do not have any pharmacological therapeutic approach1. The best solution to prevent retinal ageing is through a healthy lifestyle and proper nutrition. The diet trend in western industrialized countries is not very favourable for fatty fish omega-3 or even antioxidants3. Nutritional supplementation may be recommended by healthcare professionals4.

Dietary supplements may play a protective role in certain retinal conditions. To alleviate nutrient deficiencies and effectively support vision, Densmore laboratory develops formulas rich in nutrients selected for their properties and the reliability of their sourcing.
